Action Research Plan

Goal: To reduce the number of office referrals. Objectives of the action research is to see if there is a correlation between classroom management styles and the number of office referrals.

- How many Level I (minor infractions) and Level II (major infractions) office referrals were there by teacher?

- Do the teachers have a structured classroom management style?

- Is there a need for professional development in the area of managing behaviors in the classroom?

  1. Hi Ruth,
I think your plan is organized & concise, and I think it will yield some valuable data. Will the surveys allow you to divide the teachers into particular "management styles?" I'm not a classroom teacher, so to me that seems hard to quantify. If would probably make more sense to someone "in the trenches!"

  2. Hi Ruth,
I think you have a very organized plan. I'm curious as to why your focus is on first and second grade classes and not the entire campus. Is it because that is just easier to manage with a closer focus on primary? Several years ago, our district was trained on Love and Logic which really cut down on office referrals in our building. This year we are receiving training on CHAMPS which is more of the classroom organizational component of behavioral management. I'm only suggesting these in case your findings determine a need for staff development; these are options worth looking into.
Good luck with your research. I'm sure you are going to not only benefit your own learning, but also your campus.

  3. Thanks for the comments. I am hoping the surveys will allow me to categorize the teachers by their management styles.

Ginger, I focused on first and second grade based on my meeting with the assistant principal. Also last year our school was Pre-K through 2nd grade. We had a CHAMPS workshop during our inservice at the beginning of the year. Thanks for the advice.
